Voting During A Pandemic

By: Isabella Labrada

It’s no secret that 2020 has taken Americans by storm. When you mix a worldwide pandemic, killer hornets, and major calls for change of racial injustice; well that’s a formula for chaos. Toss a presidential election into that and basically chaos becomes pandemonium. Despite the turmoil, the importance of the 2020 election has reached astronomical proportions. Many fear that one of the consequences of the Corona virus will mean lower voter turnout.

However, this is not the first time in our history that an election is taking place during health crisis. Ironically, mid-term elections were also being held during the 1918 Spanish influenza. And although voter numbers dipped, the election took place without fail. Thanks to modern day society, voters in this election have a variety of options to cast their vote and remain safe from being exposed to Corona. Good thing too, because academic experts on both sides, including Michael McDonald a political scientist from the University of Florida, agree that diversity of this year’s voters flow from two main sources: 18-year old’s and immigrants who become legalized U.S. citizens.

Both parties have prioritized the safety and health of the voting population and that is why you have been given the privilege of choosing how to vote. Some consider voting by mail to be the safest route to conducting the civic duty with minimum exposure. To do so, you must be registered to vote first then request yourself an absentee ballot. You can fill out this ballot in the comfort of your own home without having any sort of compromises to your health. After you filled out the form, you have the choice of dropping the form off at a local ballot drop-off center or putting it right back in your mailbox. A second alternative is to vote early to avoid the large crowds. Choosing this option requires visiting designated early voting sites during specified hours. A list of sites can be found on Florida Division of Election website (https://dos.myflorida.com/elections/for-voters/voting/early-voting/).

Braddock’s Social Studies department has taken an active role in ensuring first time voters are informed and prepared to cast their ballots. American Government Teacher, JT makes watching presidential and vice-presidential debates part of his course curriculum.  Social Studies Department Head, Mary Milan has extensively promoted the Braddock Votes Club. This club focuses on promoting and normalizing voting, they want you to know that voting should be a priority of yours, if you’re a citizen over the age of 18, voting is now a responsibility and a civic duty. Milan says, “Our goal is to encourage everyone to be politically active. We want to encourage different races, economic classes, and age groups to vote and close voter audience gaps.” Due to the pandemic, Braddock Votes has embraced the change to virtual learning and paired up with the program When We All Vote. This program promotes voting among younger adults and minority groups all across the nation. It even promotes training among students to become poll workers, providing information on how to keep a safe and COVID-19 free voting environment area, so that voters will feel safe to go out and participate on their civic duties.

Despite the unprecedented circumstances, there is no excuse not to exercise your 15th Amendment; a right many countries lack. As emerging young adults, JT emphasizes that it is important to “vote and carry the weight of your new responsibility.” With all the precautions and necessary measures taken to vote, it is imperative to cast your voice in such a determining election will impact your next four years and really the course of this nation’s history. Sounds dramatic? Fits right into that 2020 mix. Happy voting!

Battle of the Consoles

By: David Negron

Two next gen consoles have just come out with the Xbox’s release on November 10th and the PS5’s on the 12th. This starts a new generation of gaming that has never been seen before by gamers. With Christmas around the corner, many teens are wondering which console to get and the decision to many is seemingly impossible.

First, let’s talk about the facts and analyze each console. When the stats are compared on paper, the Xbox Series X should be more powerful than the PS5 because of the two more teraflops it has, it also has a better CPU so it should, in theory, be faster. However, the PS5’s secret weapon is its’ ultra-fast SSD, which will probably put the console on top in terms of speed. Since Xbox’s better GPU, almost all third-party games done by developers that do not work exclusively for Microsoft or Sony should run better on the Xbox. The Xbox also has more space with a whopping 1Tb of space, where the PS5 only has 825Gb.

Now let’s talk about exclusives, which are games available exclusively to one console. The PS5 dominates the Xbox in this Category. The Xbox does have one timed exclusive, a game that is only exclusive to that console for a certain amount of time, which is Tetris Effect. The PS5 on the other hand has many exclusives. The exclusive games that released with the PS5 on launch day are Spider-Man Miles Morales, Demon Souls, Astro’s playroom, Godfall, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Although Xbox does not have many exclusive games, there are third-party games that have come out for both consoles. Some fan favorites include Call of Duty Cold War, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Dirt 5 and more. Xbox also has the advantage in backwards compatibility because it is compatible with games from every Xbox generation while the PS5 is only backwards compatible with PS4 games.

Moving onto real-world experiences with each console. Since the consoles have been out for more than two weeks, many people have tried and tested out each system. Although the Xbox seems to be more powerful on paper, and was marketed that way to consumers, the PS5 is outshining the Xbox on numerous third-party games, that the Xbox should run better for. The PS5 is also significantly faster than the Xbox, as predicted, with taking almost 30 seconds less than Xbox to get into Devil May Cry 5 and Assassins Creed Valhalla. Although 30 seconds might not seem like much, 30 seconds when gaming is simply more valuable than when doing other things.

Finally, let’s talk about which one seems to be more worth that spot on your Christmas list. The PS5 has to be the winner because of its ultra-fast SSD that really put it above the competition. It was because of this that games do not only run faster on the PS5, but also run at better quality, which is hard to believe since Xbox marketing revolved around it being the most powerful console. The amount of exclusive launch games the PS5 came out with is unheard of and arguably the best launch line up in the company’s history. Xbox’s big launch line up was Halo Infinite until it got delayed because of the backlash they received from users regarding the seemingly rushed quality. There are many things that put the PS5 over the Xbox, but overall, it is the obvious attention to detail that went into making this console and truly meeting every need, big or small, of the console’s users.

144 Boys Aim to Win it All

By: Carlos Sierra

Right before the 2020 baseball season was cut short due to the spread of Covid, the Bulldogs Baseball team held an outstanding 8-1 record, winning their first 8 games straight. This team was the best in the county and had a chance to make it far into the playoffs. Unfortunately, their journey to meet their goal of winning states was cut short due to the suspension of the season. However, for the coming season, the boys are ready to play, give it everything they have, and win it all. Not only for themselves, but for the 2020 seniors who didn’t get to go on “one last ride.”

The Braddock baseball team is jam packed with talent. Every player has something to contribute and together they are one deadly squad. Other programs have taken notice in the skill of our players. Last year we had a player from Braddock go play D1 Baseball at the University of Miami and we currently have various players on our team committed to D1 universities.

It’s no doubt the program has come a long way and grown in these past four years. One of the seniors, Daniel Verez, claims the key to this team winning was the change in culture. He says when he entered the program his freshman year, the team was “… coming off four years of being below average and had developed a losing reputation and complacency with mediocrity.” However, once this culture changed, they rose to the top and were a team that provoked fear in others. They were the #1 ranked baseball team in Miami-Dade last season and are planning to hold that rank this season.

One of our new players, Osvaldo Martinez is astonished by the culture here at Braddock. When asked on his impressions and thoughts on the team he commented, “Being new on the Braddock baseball team, I am really impressed by how much the team wants to win. Everyone has one goal in mind and that is to be the best high school baseball team in the nation.” Osvaldo further talked about the team’s mindset and how he’s never seen something of the sort before. He finds himself in the perfect environment surrounded by a great mentality where everyone wants to win, and everyone is willing to work hard for this goal. Martinez furthered this thought by saying “The winning mentality is contagious, but the brotherhood is what separates us from other schools.”

This team has high hopes and aspirations to win that state tittle. The team is surrounded by support; they believe in themselves and have a lot of faith from their coaches and school. As said by Verez , “This year we are on a mission not only for us, but for [last years seniors] as well. Nothing will stop us from winning the first state title in school history. These boys are hungry and ready to give it their all and the “144boyz” won’t disappoint.

The Ultimate Question: Christmas Day V. Christmas Eve

By: Erica Saldarriaga

For years, families have debated when the perfect time to celebrate Christmas is. While some prefer to go the more traditional route and spend December 25th (Christmas Day) basking in the enjoyments of the holiday, other prefer to celebrate the night of December 24th (Christmas Eve). Whichever you prefer to celebrate, there’s no doubt that each one has their fair share of upsides and downsides.

Celebrating on Christmas Eve: Christmas on the 24th is something that is participated in widely by the Hispanic community. Families tend to set up a big meal and later go on to dancing until 12:00p.m which is when they open the gifts that they received from “Santa.”

Pros:
-The excitement of waiting for Midnight to hit.
-Celebrating with your family at night and
spending quality times with loved ones.
-Being able to stay home on Christmas day.
-Opening presents earlier than everyone else.
Cons:
-No presents to open on Christmas Morning.
-More clean up after guests leave
-Feeling more pressure to give and
thank everyone for their presents
-On Christmas morning there is
not much left to do.
-Christmas morning tends to feel less festive

Celebrating on the Christmas Day: Christmas on the 25th is a more typical Christmas experiences. Where children wake up early and run to the tree in the morning filled with excitement. On the 25th , families usually wake up, eat a nice breakfast and spend the day together.

Pros:
-There’s less pressure on families to be around others.
-There’s no rush when opening presents.
-Families are together in a more
intimate setting, creating precious memories
-Kids have more to look forward to the night before
Cons:
-Little to no celebration the night before.
-People do not tend to spend time
with extended family until after the 25th
-Kids are more anxious when waiting for the
25th because they don’t have a distraction

Who are your gifts from?

Gifts from Santa: Typically, in American households the parents set the gifts to say: to *persons name*, from Santa. This is done so the children in the house believe that Santa is the one that came by and left the presents.

Pros:
-Children believe the tale that they are told
about Santa and it keeps holiday spirit alive
-It is easier for children to understand and does not confuse the children as to who gets them what.
-It reassures them that they will have
somebody giving them presents.
Cons:
-Children tend to get very mad or shocked when they find out the truth.
-This may cause a problem if the parents are going through financial hardship.
-There is no credit given to those who are actually giving the gifts.

Gifts from Family Members: This is done mostly in Hispanic household, family members tend to put the names Tia Santa, Abuela Santa or any other title they may have. This is done to help the smaller kids understand who they got their presents from while still keeping the holiday spirit alive.

Pros:
-Children always know who they are getting gifts from
-They tend to be more grateful to those who are giving them gifts.
-It is very direct when presents are given from family members or parents to the kids.
Cons:
-Might create confusion with who Santa is or how gift receiving works.
-Creates an expectation to receive gifts from family members/ parents.

When we hear “happy holidays” from the cashier or a close friend a lot of us immediately think about Christmas and the traditional meals that are meant to be eaten on that day. However, many people celebrate other holidays and practice different traditions, meaning that their meals can look a lot different from those eaten on Christmas day. Here are a couple traditional meals that are eaten across the world.

One of these celebrations is the Jewish holiday Hanukkah which has dates that differ each year but in take from December 10th to the 18th of this year. This holiday takes place as a celebration of the victory of the Maccabees along with the miracle that occurred during this time which allowed one day supply of oil to keep the menorah lit for 8 days. To celebrate, oil-based foods are eaten such as the staple Latkes which are fried potato pancakes made of potato starch, egg, matzo, salt, pepper, potatoes, and onions. Many families serve them with either apple sauce or sour cream to top them off with. Another food that can be commonly found on Hanukkah is Kugel which is a traditional Jewish egg noodle casserole that can be either sweet or savory, This is made because in some interpretations it is credited with mystical and spiritual qualities. This recipe can be made with the simple ingredients of wide egg noodles, 5 large eggs, melted butter, sour cream, cottage cheese, sugar, and cinnamon. After cooking the noodles for about 5 minutes the rest of the ingredients will be mixed and baked at 350 degrees for an hour.  After that, the dish should be cooled and ready to eat!

Another commonly celebrated holiday is Kwanzaa, which is observed to be an African American celebration of life that takes place between the 26th of December and the 1st of January every year. This holiday is not only to celebrate life but to also celebrate African heritage, unity, and culture. On these days any and all types of dishes are made with no set meals or recipes. But one common dish that is native to the holiday is jerk chicken. This dish has recipes that can differ from family to family but most of the ingredients stay the same throughout. A common way to prepare the includes the ingredients bone in chicken, green onions, garlic, ginger, habanero peppers, lime juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, thyme, allspice cinnamon and nutmeg, and some black pepper. To make this meal, the chicken is placed in a gallon size plastic bag while the marinade is being made. With the marinade made it is then poured in the bag and left to marinate in the refrigerator for 3-24 hours. After the chicken marinates, it is baked at 375 degrees for 45-50 minutes. After the chicken is cooked thoroughly in the oven, it is ready to be served and enjoyed.
