World News: Olympic Recap

This year the winter Olympics took place from February 9th to February 25th in Pyeongchang County, South Korea. The games had star-studded attendees, including Ivanka Trump, Mike Pence, and Kim Jong-un’s sister, Kim Yo-jong just to name a few.

The games brought with them several historical moments. The first ever Nigerian bobsled team to competed. They ended their inaugural run with 52.21 seconds.

The United States ended the Olympics in fourth place with a total of 23 medals, nine of them were gold. Despite a low medal count, the men’s U.S. hockey team did not place but, the U.S. girl’s hockey beat Canada for the first time in 28 years.  The U.S. men’s curling team won gold for the first time against Sweden. This was a big and shocking win for the U.S. as they had lost against Sweden in the 2010 and 2014 Olympics. Another important moment for the U.S. was embracing our first openly gay Olympian Athlete, Adam Rippon. He helped the U.S. obtain a bronze in a figure skating event.
